Owensboro Health Awarded 'Top 100 Hospitals' Recognition from Thomson Reuters

Hospital one of two in Kentucky to make the list

On April 16, the research firm, Thomson Reuters announced Owensboro Health as one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation.

The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® study evaluates performance in 10 areas; mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average patient stay, expenses, profitability, patient satisfaction, adherence to clinical standards of care, post-discharge mortality, and readmission rates for acute myocardial infraction (heart attack), heart failure and pneumonia.

“This is such a great honor to be recognized as a Top 100 hospital,” said Dr. Jeff Barber, president & CEO of Owensboro Health. “I’ve known all along we have great, high quality care and this just confirms that what we’re doing is saving lives.” 

Owensboro Health was one of only two hospitals in Kentucky to be recognized as a Top 100 hospital. Thomson Reuters has been conducting this study, annually, since 1993. To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, researchers evaluated 2,886 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals. They used public information, including Medicare cost reports and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website.

So what does this recognition mean for patients? According to the data if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in a Top 100 hospital, more than 186,000 additional lives could be saved and approximately 56,000 additional patients could have complication free stays and the average patient stay would decrease by nearly half a day. Those numbers add up to potentially 4.3 billion dollars being saved.
