Biography

Dr. Thomas Waring's specific pulmonary interests include minimally invasive lung cancer diagnosis with endobronchial ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsies. Using this technique, Dr. Waring can sample lymph nodes in a patient’s chest without surgery. He also utilizes super dimensional software to map the human lung to find lung cancer.

“It’s a GPS system that guides us to the lesion of interest,” Dr. Waring said of this approach. “Lung cancer is all about personalization. Here at Owensboro Health, we use a multidisciplinary team approach to give each patient the best lung cancer care in the region.”

His other specific interest is diffuse lung disease such as pulmonary fibrosis (lung scarring). Dr. Waring also uses a multidisciplinary team approach to care for pulmonary fibrosis patients, offering newer anti-fibrotic medications in conjunction with pulmonary rehab and advanced exercise training to improve lung function.

Dr. Waring said the team at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital is bringing a new approach to the intensive care setting.

“For patients with severe lung disease and who are critically ill, some patients will be candidates for a new technique called ‘prone positioning,’ or turning patients upside-down, to aid in lung healing,” Dr. Waring said. “Newer data reflects better outcomes with this technique.”

Dr. Waring said he also strives for quality with compassion in a safe environment.

“Involving patients in their care is the most important factor in shared decision making,” Dr. Waring said. “Patients should be empowered with the knowledge to manage their disease state. That’s how I strive to be their top choice for a pulmonary physician in the region.”

"Dr. Waring, On behalf of the family of Frances O. please accept our heart-felt gratitude to you for your care and concern for our mother. Although your association with her as a caregiver was brief, you did not dismiss her and did not abandon her or us when we needed you. Your involvement in her care meant so much. You were truly the one provider that was upfront with her about her condition, and you lead the care of her with enthusiasm and spirit. We are and will forever be grateful to you for looking beyond her as a number and for taking care of her as a person. God bless you Dr. Waring." - Karen
