At Owensboro Health, we believe nursing is a special calling. We know that preparing the next generation of professional nurses starts in the classroom. But we also understand nursing school takes a lot of time, dedication and resources. That’s why we’re here to help.

We offer financial assistance of up to $2,500 per semester to cover tuition, fees and books. And when you’re ready for some hands-on experience, apply to be an Owensboro Health nurse extern and get paid while you learn.

Assistance Details

Who is eligible?

Students who have been accepted into an accredited nursing program may apply for educational assistance. Candidates must be seeking a first-time nursing degree.

How much am I eligible for?

Our program offers up to $2,500 per semester for a maximum of four semesters. Funds may be used to cover the cost of tuition, books, fees and uniforms. Assistance is awarded prior to the fall or spring semester, whichever is applicable.

What are the academic requirements of the program?

Students are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA and current enrollment in the nursing program. See full ongoing educational assistance requirements below.

What are my obligations to Owensboro Health?

In applying for educational assistance, students commit to work at Owensboro Health for a designated period of time--six months for every semester funded--once they obtain registered nursing licensure. Students who reject an offer of employment or withdraw from their nursing program are expected to reimburse the educational assistance plus 8 percent.

How to Apply

To be considered for assistance, applicants must submit all of the following items:

  • Completed and signed application
  • Official high school and college transcripts
  • Official acceptance letter from an accredited nursing program
  • Two letters of endorsement
  • 500 word essay on the topic: “Why I am seeking a career in nursing and my goals upon completion of my degree.”

Ongoing Expecations

Ongoing Expectations for Recipients of Owensboro Health Educational Assistance

  • At the end of each semester, students must submit a copy of their grades to Human Resource Development.
  • Students must maintain an accumulated GPA of 3.0. Failure to maintain a 3.0 GPA will result in ineligibility for continued assistance.
  • Students must maintain a full-time status and remain in good standing with the college or university.
  • Students must remain in good standing with the organization. Any disciplinary action taken as a result of a clinical rotation or nurse extern program, or termination of employment with Owensboro Health will result in forfeiture of assistance.
  • Students must submit documentation of costs for each semester for which they are requesting assistance.
  • Nursing degree candidates who refuse a position offered by Owensboro Health must begin repaying the assistance within 30 days.
  • Employment at Owensboro Health is based on current staffing needs. Educational assistance does not guarantee employment with Owensboro Health; individuals who are not offered a position with Owensboro Health are expected to repay the assistance in full.
