Owensboro Health Healthpark hosts first ever Health Connections Fair

The Owensboro Health Healthpark is hosting the Health Connections fair, with a special focus on the health of individuals age 50 and up.

The Health Connections fair will run from 8 to 11 a.m. on Friday, June 20, at the Healthpark on Ford Avenue. Owensboro Health’s Golden Partners, a division of the Healthpark, has put together the event, which also features wellness and information booths, healthy snacks, hearing tests, lab screenings and fitness testing. There will also be door prizes and other handy materials available, free of charge.

Jean Julius, a health and wellness specialist with Golden Partners at the Healthpark, said this is a new take on a previous event.

“This is our first event of this kind.  We used to offer quarterly screenings but this event is expanding the information and activities offered,” Julius said. “The goal of this event is to encourage and support wellness for older adults.”

The event is being held in partnership with AARP, the Green River Area Development District and the Alzheimer’s Association. More than 20 Owensboro Health clinics and departments are also taking part, including Cardiac Care, the Wound Center, the Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center, Home Health and Lifeline.

Melinda Cornell, also a health and wellness specialist with Golden Partners, said the most valuable resource they’ll have is information. Cornell said they also hope to make this an annual event in addition to quarterly screening events.

“We are specifically wanting to highlight hospital departments at this health fair.  Many times we hear people say ‘I didn’t know the hospital offered this or that,’ so we what to showcase what the hospital does offer,” Cornell said. “We also want to promote good health by offering health screenings and fitness testing. When the participant leaves here they will walk away with the results of their fitness testing and if necessary with suggestions on how to improve their physical health with exercise.”

The fitness testing at the event is free but there are costs associated with the lab tests. Results from the tests will be mailed to participants. The tests cost as follows:

  • Lipid profile (cholesterol, requires fasting for at least 10 hours before test) - $22
  • Hemoglobin A1C (blood sugar/diabetes) - $20
  • PSA (Prostate Specific Antibody, screens men for prostate cancer) - $26

Preregistration for this event is required by Thursday, June 18. To preregister, or for more information about Health Connections, call 270-688-4855.
