Part of building a healthy community is making quality healthcare accessible to everyone. The Owensboro Health McAuley Center meets an important need in our community by offering free primary care to low-income and uninsured people. Last year, we treated over 16,000 patients.
Our services include:
- Physical exams
- Treatment of minor illnesses
- Management of diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases
- Assistance obtaining mammograms
When patients need specialized treatment, we work with community agencies like DC-CAP and GRDHD to secure referrals to specialty physicians.
Our team is led by Mary Danhauer (right), APRN, a nurse practitioner with an extraordinary record of patient care and community service, for which she and the McAuley staff were recently honored. Physician assistants also see patients at the clinic.
In addition to a fulltime staff provided by Owensboro Health, the clinic receives support from more than a dozen devoted volunteers, including both clinical and nonclinical workers.
According to a survey conducted by the clinic, 48 percent of McAuley patients would not have access to primary care if the clinic did not exist. Another 45 percent used the hospital emergency department for primary care before becoming a McAuley patient.

The Owensboro Health McAuley Center was established in 1990 by Mercy Hospital, churches and the community. It offers free medical care to anyone without healthcare insurance. Sources of funding include the Owensboro Health Foundation For Health and Catholic Healthcare Partners, as well as Owensboro Health.
The clinic moved to its current location on 9th Street in November 2011. The new facility offers additional capacity to meet a growing need for basic healthcare services. McAuley was previously located at the Daniel Pitino Shelter.
