Hip replacement

Owensboro Health orthopedic surgeon Dr. Anthony McBride specializes in direct anterior hip replacement surgery, which accesses the hip joint from the front of the body, instead of the traditional backside approach.

The direct anterior method allows the hip to be replaced without detaching muscle from the pelvis or thigh bone, offering numerous advantages compared to conventional surgery, including:

  • Average hospital stay of two to four days, rather than three to 10 days
  • A smaller incision of four to five inches, instead of 10 to 12 inches
  • Less disturbance to muscles, reducing recovery time to two to eight weeks, instead of two to four months
  • Reduced pain, less blood loss and speedy return to normal activities

Knee replacement

Owensboro Health’s orthopedic surgeons do custom knee replacements using Signature imaging technology and Biomet prosthetics, using MRIs to read the knee before surgery to customize the cutting block for an exact fit of the knee.

This procedure involves a more exact cut, requiring less tissue manipulation and a reduced need for knee alignment adjustment at the bedside. Fewer steps, fewer instruments, a faster recovery and a better fit mean you’re back on your feet fast.

Recovery

During your stay, you’ll find that our unique combination of dedicated staff and patient-supported rehabilitation make hip and knee replacement surgery recovery a quick, gratifying experience.

Hip and knee replacement procedures are scheduled on Monday mornings. Patients undergoing surgery on the same day attend a group preadmission and education session together, often sparking a camaraderie that plays an important role in rehabilitation.

You’ll recuperate from surgery in our warm, home-like environment, wearing your regular clothes. Under the careful medical supervision of the staff at Owensboro Health Orthopedics, patients form a close-knit support group, encouraging a healthy and active recovery.
