Owensboro Health Pediatrics-Surgical Care Unit
The pediatric-surgical unit at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital specializes in the treatment of the pediatric patient (ages birth to 16) as well as specialty procedures for all ages. Some of the common children's conditions we treat include:
- Asthma attacks
- Tonsil removals
- Respiratory conditions
- Nausea and other gastrointestinal conditions
- Various types of wounds and infections
Our unit also treats adult patients recovering from allergy, ENT, urology and women's surgical procedures.
First, you should know that safety and security are a top priority on our unit. We offer 24/7 monitoring, and our staff makes extra rounds throughout the day. Patients under the age of 12 are banded and are not allowed to leave the unit. We take great care to make sure your child is safe. If you are a parent or guardian, we will explain our safety program to you during an orientation session.
Our unit is designed to make kids feel as cozy and comfortable as possible. Special touches give the floor kid appeal. Meanwhile, our team enjoys interacting with children and giving each patient personalized attention. We play games, celebrate successes, and work to make patients and their families feel at home.
The average pediatric inpatient stay at Owensboro Health is three and a half days. During a child’s care, parents are welcome and encouraged to stay; a comfortable bed and meals are provided.
Our nurses are Pediatric Care Certified, receive regular training in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and pass an annual skill competency for administering child medications, pediatric emergency and pediatric equipment.
Owensboro Health has a close relationship with Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, recently recognized as one of America's "Best Children's Hospitals" by U.S. News & World Report. So while you can count on Owensboro Health for quality care, you can also trust us to make the right call should your child need to be transferred.
In addition to pediatric cases, the unit also treats a wide variety of adult patients as well. Some of the specialties we treat include:
Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)
Most patients recovering from ENT procedures will be treated on the Family Care Unit. Some of the common procedures we see include:
- Thyroid removals
- Parathyroid removals
Most patients recovering from urological procedures will be treated on the Family Care Unit. Some of the common procedures we see include:
- Kidney stones
- Prostate removals
- Urinary tract infections
Most patients recovering from women's surgical procedures will be treated on the Family Care Unit. We often care for expectant mothers suffering from nausea, and we treat all robotic-assisted hysterectomy cases. After these operations, patients are sent to our unit for extended rest or overnight stays.
Another service our unit provides is helping mothers and families who have lost newborn babies. We have special suites where we offer visitation services and grief counseling to families. Our staff is specially trained to handle these cases with care and compassion.

Like all units at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, our nursing staff practices intentional rounding, a system where patients are checked at least once an hour and assessed for a variety of needs. We believe this system builds trust with our patients and improves satisfaction.
Our staff is tested every three months on core competencies and receives regular training and skills updates.
