Job Summary

  • Assists the nursing staff by performing assigned duties. Under the supervision of an RN, performs patient care activities for which they have had education, training and return demonstration of competence. Training is provided relevant to the population served, based on the scope of care of the service assignment.

Job Responsibilities
  • Greets and orients new patients to their hospital environment.
  • Contributes to the assessment of patients by collecting data for review by a nurse.
  • Ensures documentation is accurate, complete, specific, and timely.
  • Assists nursing staff to identify physical, psychosocial, age specific and cultural considerations of each patient.
  • Works with the nursing staff to provide personal care according to organizational standards and policies.
  • Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
  • Performs patient nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including collecting specimens, vital signs, and other related data.
  • Performs patient care activities, treatments, and procedures under direct supervision of RN staff for which individual has demonstrated competence in their nursing program. Nursing Externs do not administer medication orally, IV, or into any body cavity, initiate or maintain IV therapy or perform patient assessments. (see KBN Advisory Opinion Statement)
  • Demonstrates interpersonal competency in dealing with patients specific to the work area.

Education
  • Must be enrolled in and entering the last year of an accredited school of Nursing.
Licensure/Certification/Registration
  • Certified as a Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider required within 90 days of employment in this position.
Work Experience
  • None required.
Skills & Attributes
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
