Job Summary
  • As a member of the Trauma team, facilitates efficient, effective, quality care for the trauma population across the continuum, utilizing advanced education, expert clinical skills and practice. Collaborates with the entire multi-disciplinary team to assist with the care management for trauma patients and to enhance customer satisfaction and maximize patient outcomes. Utilizes the plan of care to monitor patient progress and assure patient requirements are matched with appropriate resources.
Job Responsibilities
  • Utilizes evidence-based practice when interacting with the patient and family and has a good understanding of accepted trauma guidelines.
  • Identifies patients for the trauma registry through daily data abstraction and/or rounding.
  • Facilitates the progress and outcome of the patient's plan of care.
  • Assists the ED staff in the care of the trauma patient in the Emergency Department and serves as a role model to the ED staff in the care of the trauma patient as indicated.
  • Assists in preparation for the American College of Surgeons (ACS) site visits/verification process.
  • Assists the Trauma Registrar in data entry, reporting, and evaluation of trauma data.
  • Provides timely follow-up to hospitals who transfer a patient’s into Owensboro Health.
  • Works with the hospital staff to assure documentation of care of the trauma patient is thorough and consistent.
  • Participates in the education of hospital nursing, EMS personnel and the community in trauma and prevention related subjects.
  • Identifies all Performance Improvement patient care issues throughout daily chart review and collaboration of the care team and reports to the Director of Trauma Services/Trauma Services Medical Director.
  • Assists the Director of Trauma Services in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a quality plan which is multidisciplinary and patient outcome focused.
  • Enters Performance Improvement issues into the registry and assures that all issues are addressed and “loop closed” within a timely fashion. Notifies the Director of Trauma Services of any issues that cannot be closed due to issues beyond his/her control.
  • Participates in Registry validation activities by scheduled chart review and reports findings to the Director of Trauma Services.
  • Participates in research studies for publication and epidemiology research to demonstrate program growth, process improvements, and medical practice improvements.
  • Assists/Develops weekly and/or monthly trauma meetings presentations.
  • Collects, trends and tracks performance improvement data to improve patient outcomes.
  • Develops a strong working relationship with medical staff providers in various disciplines.
  • Identifies learning needs of the nursing staff, patient, and family, professionals and lay community regarding the trauma population and the trauma guidelines.
  • Functions as a patient advocate and encourages patient advocacy through the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Completes job-specific orientation, trauma-specific competencies (input, evaluation, and reporting) from the National Trauma Databank software.
  • Represents Owensboro Health and Trauma Services in a variety of local and regional public professional meetings.

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Nursing required.
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) required. Eligible to practice nursing in the State of Kentucky required. Certified as a Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider required within 45 days of employment in this position. Certified as an Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider and certification in Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) required within 1 year of employment in this position.
Work Experience
  • A minimum of 3 years' progressive experience in a related field.
