Owensboro Health Earns Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award

Owensboro Health’s pharmacy department has been recognized at the state level, earning an award for innovation in pharmacy practice.

On October 14 at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville, the Kentucky Society of Health System Pharmacists recognized Owensboro Health with the Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award.

Owensboro Health received the award for work done on medication reconciliation in the Emergency Department at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. The pharmacy was also recognized for use of pharmacy techs to provide services to patients.

Heather Haynes, director of Pharmacy, said her department has also been recognized by The Joint Commission during accreditation and that this award is a great achievement.

“We were compared against all the healthcare systems in Kentucky for this award. That's what makes this really special,” Haynes said. “Medication reconciliation is such a hot topic and it’s such a burden for healthcare facilities to figure out how they're going to do it in a safe way. Jason and Kristan have developed a process that makes it very efficient while capturing the largest percentage of patients.”

Haynes said the initiative was successful thanks to a team approach that goes well beyond Pharmacy.

“(It includes) our whole organization, with the support of ED staff, physicians and administration,” Haynes said. “It speaks to how our organization doesn't work in silos but comes together to create the best process and outcomes for our patients.”
