Owensboro Health Foundation Announces Grant From The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels

The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels has announced funding of a grant for Owensboro Health Foundation, with funds slated to support care for fragile newborns.

The grant will fund the purchase of a portable amplitude-integrated EEG monitor (aEEG) for the Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. This device provides simplified monitoring of brain function of pre-term babies for 24 hours or more (as needed), allowing easier observation and review by medical staff. This device is also portable, which allows it to be placed next to a crib, and only requires three to five sensor electrodes to be placed on the scalp of the baby.

The Level III NICU at Owensboro Health is the largest of its kind in this region, offering care for babies of any weight who have reached at least 27 weeks of gestation. The NICU earned this designation in March 2015.

Dr. Bridget Burshears, medical director of the NICU at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, said the device helps give providers vital information about a baby’s brain function without waiting for a specialist elsewhere to review and interpret the results.

“It'll offer more information to help us decide how best to treat our patients,” Dr. Burshears said. “It keeps us up to date with the most advanced neonatal intensive care units and, more importantly, it has the potential to help us keep more patients close to home.”
