Owensboro Health Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Hosts BRA Day To Raise Breast Reconstruction Awareness

Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day is coming in and Owensboro Health is holding an open house where patients can learn about available options.

The BRA Day open house will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. It will be held in the Owensboro Health Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery practice, at 1000 Breckenridge Street, Suite 303. The event is free and open to the public, with appetizers and refreshments, doctor meet-and-greet, information on services, free gifts and more.

Dr. Janae Kittinger, one of the practice’s three plastic and reconstructive surgeons, said the goal is to help give women options, even if it has been years since their fight with cancer. BRA Day is meant to help women learn more about their options.

“The objective of BRA Day is to close the loop, educate and make sure patients understand their reconstructive options,” Dr. Janae Kittinger said. “There's been a lot of research showing that patients are not aware of all the reconstruction options, the complete list of what's available.”

In 2014, more than 236,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website said less than one-fourth of all women understand the range of reconstruction options available. Dr. Kittinger also noted women may not know that insurance companies have been required by law to cover the cost of breast reconstruction after cancer since 1998.

“My goal is to bring some positivity back to them and start them on their healing in every aspect, physically and emotionally, to get them back to where they want to be,” Dr. Janae Kittinger said.
