A Message to our Patients, Families and Communities

Owensboro Health committed to quality, affordability of health care services

Recently you may have seen messages or heard conversations about the prices of health care services in our local community. We know costs are important and want to make sure our patients and members of our community have up-to-date information on our prices and the high-quality services we provide every day.

Owensboro Health is committed to delivering high-quality, affordable health care services to the communities we serve. Like all hospitals, we are required to post a list of prices for all our services online. In addition to posting the required chargemaster list, we provide a patient-friendly comparison of prices for services most commonly offered in our different departments. Our price list is available here, and we invite everyone to take a look.

It should be noted, however, that standard charges do not reflect discounts negotiated by insurance companies or other payment discounts which can significantly reduce the amount paid by the insurer and the patient.

We continually evaluate our pricing against local, state and national benchmarks. Over the past few years, we have taken steps to reduce charges for many common services, including lab, therapy, and diagnostic imaging procedures like MRIs and CT scans.

According to the most recent Hospital Charge Index report published by Cleverley & Associates, a national health care finance consulting organization, inpatient and outpatient charges at Owensboro Health are lower in aggregate than other hospitals in the region. (Source: Cleverley & Associates)

A review of current 2020 charges for common x-ray, CT, MRI and ultrasound procedures shows the services at our hospitals are: 1) lower than the statewide average in Kentucky; and 2) equal to or lower than a majority of hospitals in the surrounding area. In addition to being competitively priced, diagnostic images performed in our facilities are reviewed by top-quality radiologists. Images and results are shared with the patient’s treating physician through our electronic medical record system, ensuring continuity of care and a timely diagnosis when it matters most. There are no films or discs to carry, just high-quality images sent directly to your doctor.

When comparing prices across all procedures, our prices are not the lowest for every single procedure, but we remain highly competitive compared to most hospitals in the area and even many freestanding facilities.

Owensboro Health also works closely with the major health insurers serving the region and regularly reviews our contracts to ensure the greatest access to affordable care for our local residents. We remain in active discussions with the major payers on strategies to incentivize and expand access to our high-quality services.

Owensboro Health Regional Hospital and Muhlenberg Community Hospital have achieved top ratings for quality and patient safety. Together our facilities provided more than 84,000 emergency room visits, 17,000 inpatient admissions and one million outpatient visits in 2019, and we delivered more than 2,000 newborns. Our Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is the largest in Western Kentucky, providing advanced care for infants born with serious problems. Our facilities are equipped with the latest technology and diagnostic equipment, ensuring faster and more accurate decisions about your care.

Owensboro Health exists to heal the sick and improve the health of the communities we serve. Each of our more than 4,200 employees takes that mission to heart each and every day.
