OHMCH Earns 5-Star Rating From CMS

Owensboro Health Muhlenberg Community Hospital

5 stars

Only five hospitals in Kentucky were awarded a five-star rating for 2023

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) named Owensboro Health Muhlenberg Community Hospital one of only five five-star rated hospitals in the state of Kentucky, a distinction that recognizes the quality of care offered by OHMCH.

Ratings awarded by CMS measure the quality of care at more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals and medical centers nationwide. In collaboration with organizations representing a range of stakeholders, including consumers, hospitals, doctors and employers, CMS was created to allow patients to make informed decisions regarding their healthcare providers.

CMS lists the complete Kentucky rankings on its Hospital Compare website, which shows most hospitals fall under the three-star category (29 out of 79 total hospitals). Owensboro Health Muhlenberg Community Hospital is accompanied by only St. Elizabeth Edgewood (Edgewood), Harrison Memorial Hospital (Cynthiana), Marcum And Wallace Memorial Hospital (Irvine) and Saint Joseph Berea on the list of five-star honorees.

OHMCH has achieved a five-star rating in three out of the last four years — in 2020, 2021 and 2023. This accomplishment is an improvement over its previous rating of four stars. The hospital has been operated by Owensboro Health since 2015.

Ed Heath, Chief Executive Officer for Owensboro Health Muhlenberg Community Hospital, credits his team members for the hospital’s five-star rating.

“This 5-star rating means we can all be proud of our team’s dedication to safe, reliable care as we fulfill our mission to heal the sick and to improve the health of the communities we serve.”

Variables CMS weighs in its rating system include patient experiences, value of care and timeliness, among other factors. Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Myer recognizes that Owensboro Health Muhlenberg Community Hospital team members’ actions have made this improvement.

“A five-star rating reflects the performance of approximately 40 quality safety standards measured by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid that includes survey feedback from our patients of a highly satisfied customer experience. With only five Kentucky acute care hospitals currently recognized by five stars, it is easy to appreciate how challenging it is to achieve five-star prestigious performance,” Myer said.
