The introduction of Owensboro Health Medical Group - Neurosurgery was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting and welcome reception on June 12 at The Springs, 2200 E. Parrish Ave., Building C—Suite 101. This new branch of Owensboro Health is an important expansion in specialized care, focusing on neurosurgical services that cater to various conditions involving the brain, spinal column, nervous system, and peripheral nerves.
"At Owensboro Health, we are committed to providing our community with access to the most advanced treatment options and personalized care, close to home. That's why we are thrilled to announce the opening of Owensboro Health Neurosurgery and the addition of an on-staff neurosurgeon to our organization for the first time,” said Mark Marsh, president and CEO of Owensboro Health.
“This is a significant milestone in our efforts to provide comprehensive neurological care to our patients. Our new neurosurgery program will offer a wide range of services and we are confident that this new program will make a positive impact on the lives of our patients and their families."
As a discipline, neurosurgery is dedicated to the intricate care of injuries and disorders affecting the nervous system. Neurosurgeons like Dr. Smith are uniquely trained to address conditions of the brain as well as the full span of the spinal column. They possess extensive education that includes four years of medical school, seven years of residency, and additional fellowships spanning one to two years. Such a comprehensive training regimen ensures that neurosurgeons are exceptionally well-prepared to perform the complex surgeries their specialty demands.
The practice offers a multitude of procedures, including spine fusion surgeries, craniotomies for exploratory purposes or specific anterior and posterior approaches, and resections of brain tumors. Patients of Owensboro Health Medical Group - Neurosurgery can expect to receive care from a multidisciplinary team comprising not only board-certified and fellowship-trained neurosurgeons but also radiologists, pain specialists, credentialed nurses, and other professionals who work collaboratively to provide optimal surgical outcomes. These procedures will be performed at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, allowing patients to receive advanced care without having to travel far.
Dr. Adrian Smith, a standout in neurosurgery, brings his passion for the brain and nervous system to Owensboro. His philosophy of patient care revolves around the objective of restoring normal function and quality of life to those he treats, leveraging minimally invasive techniques wherever possible to achieve these goals. Smith’s personable and relatable bedside manner is complemented by his substantial qualifications and commitment to being readily available for his patients.
Ian Clark, PA-C, chose neurosurgery because of its demanding nature and the constant learning it necessitates. Clark, born in Owensboro and a longtime contributor to the community, transitioned from serving as a lieutenant at the Owensboro Fire Department to becoming a physician assistant. He views his role at Owensboro Health as an extension of his dedication to serving his community. His approach to care is patient-centric, treating each patient with the attentiveness and concern one would offer to family or friends.
The opening of Owensboro Health Medical Group - Neurosurgery is a beacon of progress in medical services for Owensboro and surrounding communities, ensuring that residents have access to highly specialized care right at their doorstep. Adding Dr. Adrian Smith and Ian Clark to the Owensboro Health team reaffirms its commitment to healing the community.
