Despite Cold Weather, Outdoor Exercise is Safe
Although many people shy away from playing sports or exercising outdoors during the winter, assuming the cold weather makes it unsafe or uncomfortable, there’s no reason to worry.
Jason Anderson, manager of health and fitness at the Owensboro Health Healthpark, encourages people to embrace the cold — with a few precautions.
“Don’t be scared of the cold,” Anderson said, brushing off myths like freezing your lungs. “With the weather we see here, it shouldn’t be a danger.”
Anderson points to clothing choices as a major factor in outdoor winter safety. Noting that when your body generates heat, it still needs a way to escape, he advises against cotton, which traps sweat. Instead, choose fabrics like polyester or moisture-wicking materials to keep your body temperature regulated.
“When you’re out there, your body temperature will rise,” Anderson explained. “Dress in tight layers so you can adjust as needed.”
Visibility is also important in winter. Daylight hours are short, and many people wear black clothing, which blends into the darkness. Anderson recommends wearing reflective vests or adding a flashing light to your gear. Local running stores, like Legends, sell visibility accessories.
To protect your hands, ears and head, wear gloves and a hat, like a beanie or sock cap — also made of technical fabrics, not cotton.
“Be mindful of windchill,” Anderson added, noting that cold and windy days can make outdoor exercise more challenging.
And there are mental and physical benefits to being outside during the winter.
“It seems like everything outside is a shade of gray, brown or black, but getting outside, getting that natural Vitamin D from the sun and breathing that air can really be invigorating,” Anderson said. “Drawing in that cool air kind of wakes you up and gets you feeling good. Me and my family want to try to be outside if we can.”
For those not ready to brave the cold, the Healthpark offers indoor facilities like a walking track, weight room, basketball court and more. Anderson added that some members take advantage of the location on Ford Avenue by coming inside to change clothes before walking around the block.
Whether you’re walking, running or playing sports, Anderson’s advice is simple: Stay active, stay warm and stay safe. With the right clothing and preparation, outdoor exercise can be a great way to improve both your physical and mental well-being this winter.
