Owensboro Health Regional Hospital has once again earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® certification for superior energy performance. This marks the sixth consecutive year that the hospital has received this recognition, demonstrating a lasting commitment to sustainability and responsible energy use.

ENERGY STAR certified buildings and plants perform in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide. The certification is awarded based on verified energy performance that accounts for weather, occupancy and operating hours, making it the most trusted energy efficiency designation in the country.

Owensboro Health Regional Hospital achieved an ENERGY STAR score of 77, outperforming most U.S. hospitals and continuing its track record of excellence in facility management.

“We’re proud to once again be recognized for our energy efficiency,” said Mark Marsh, Owensboro Health President and CEO. “This award reflects the dedication of our team to operate responsibly, reduce our environmental impact and keep resources focused on what matters most—our patients and community.”

The hospital’s success builds on a decade-long journey toward sustainability. Since partnering with Trane Energy Specialists in 2014, Owensboro Health has reduced its overall energy consumption by more than 26 percent, saving over $5 million in utility costs. These savings are reinvested in patient care, technology and community programs.

Barry Mullen, Facilities Supervisor, said the recognition represents both progress and teamwork. “We’ve made smart, lasting changes—from LED lighting and motion sensors to HVAC setback systems and real-time monitoring. Every team member plays a role in keeping Owensboro Health efficient and sustainable.”

The Pleasant Valley Medical Office Building, connected to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, has also achieved ENERGY STAR certification for three consecutive years. Other Owensboro Health facilities, including the Henderson Healthplex, are pursuing similar goals with the addition of solar energy systems.

Former Executive Director of Facilities Joe Taylor, who continues to consult with Owensboro Health, said maintaining high efficiency requires constant attention. “Earning ENERGY STAR year after year isn’t automatic—it takes daily effort and commitment. We’re proud that this work not only saves money but also protects our environment for future generations.”

On average, ENERGY STAR certified buildings use 35 percent less energy, cause 35 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and cost less to operate—without compromising performance or comfort.

Owensboro Health remains one of only a handful of hospitals in Kentucky to hold this distinction, and the only one in Western Kentucky to do so.
