Healthy Tips Video: Five Easy ways to Deal with Workplace Stress

Hi, I'm David Roark. I am a licensed professional therapist with Owensboro Health's Employee Assistance Program based in the Healthpark. I'm here today to give you your health tip regarding five easy ways to deal with workplace stress.

Number One

Number one is identifying your stressors, the things, the people, and the places that put you most often in stress. Stopping, thinking of what those are, maybe even coming up with a simple plan to deal with those. So when they arise, you know exactly what you're wanting to do.

Number Two

Number two is to make sure we're taking care of ourselves physically, make sure we're hydrated, make sure we're eating a healthy snack during the day. Make sure we're catching up on lunch, even if you have a break during the day, perhaps going for a walk. Or even taking that break time and dedicating it to listening to our favorite song, or even looking at an app that you've downloaded that could help with deep breathing or relaxation techniques.

Number Three

Number three is setting boundaries for ourselves. Us in the helping profession sometimes get so busy taking care of others that we forget to take care of ourselves.

It is OK to say no, in regards to your physical health and emotional health. Sometimes it helps to sit down and come up with a friendly, but assertive way, to say no, I don't feel like I can do that right now.

Number Four

Number four is making sure you leave your work at the workplace. All too often, our buddies go home but our minds stay on the job. Making sure that you have a list of things that you want to do for recreation, and spending time with our friends and family can help you be more mindful of making recreation a priority.

Number Five

Number five is talk to someone you trust, whether that be a friend, a support group, a coworker, or one of us here at the EAP. In today's climate we have learned that it is OK to not be OK. And there's more strength in sharing than there is in silence. For more information on this topic or other well-being resources, please contact the Healthpark at 270-688-5433.
