Resident Physicians Screen Patients for Skin Cancer at Free Event

Dr. Darby Cole

This past Saturday, April 15, 50 people took advantage of free skin cancer assessments offered by the Owensboro Health Family Medicine Residency Clinic. The Walk-In Wellness Screening is one of three that will provide little-to-no-cost health assessments to the community.

Eleven resident physicians conducted the head-to-toe skin-cancer screenings at their Parrish Medical Building clinic in Owensboro. A team of two residents, overseen by three experienced faculty, examined each patient, and 18 of those patients required biopsies to determine if their lesions were cancerous or benign.

"We were so pleased with the community turnout," said Mack McKeown, practice administrator for the clinic. "We had such a sense of camaraderie among the team that it didn't really seem like work." McKeown went on to say that even though most of their patients arrived in the first two hours, no one had to wait more than five to 10 minutes to be seen.

“We wanted to send the message that family medicine is here to do more than treat patients’ acute needs. We truly are invested in our community to improve their short- and long-term health,” said Dr. Darby Cole, Owensboro Health Family Medicine Residency Director. “These screening events are a great way for our residents to be effective contributors to the health and wellness of our community.”

Upcoming Walk-in Wellness Screenings include free school physical exams on May 13 and diabetes assessments for a $25 fee on June 17. For more information, please visit OwensboroHealth.org/FMRClinic.
