Owensboro Health and UofL: Empowering Future Nurses through the Accelerated Second-Degree BSN Program

A Pathway to a New Career

University of Louisville School of Nursing, in partnership with the Owensboro Health, proudly offers the Accelerated Second-Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program. This innovative program is designed for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field but have a passion for healthcare and a desire to become nurses. The ABSN program provides a unique blend of online coursework and hands-on clinical experiences within the Owensboro area, allowing students to balance their educational pursuits with personal and professional responsibilities.

Program Structure and Features

The ABSN program spans four semesters over a 15-month period, with courses beginning in the summer term. Students engage in a variety of clinical experiences at regionally and nationally recognized healthcare agencies, benefiting from the expertise of outstanding faculty members who are committed to their success. The program's state-of-the-art simulation laboratories, staffed by certified simulation faculty, offer a safe and supportive environment for students to develop and refine their practical skills.

Graduates of the ABSN program are well-prepared to demonstrate excellence in nursing science, practice, and leadership across various settings. They are also equipped to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX) and have the foundational knowledge to pursue further education at the master’s or doctoral level.

Student Experiences

Ashton Frantz

Ashton Frantz, a first-semester student in the ABSN program, shares her journey and motivation for becoming a nurse. “I have a desire to help others and a passion for healthcare,” Ashton says. “The ABSN program allows me to quickly and efficiently pursue a nursing career because I am eager to begin changing the lives of those in need.”

Ashton discovered the ABSN program through her work at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. She was impressed by the seamless transition into the program and the welcoming nature of the faculty and staff. “They have made the transition very smooth, despite adjusting to the fast-paced curriculum. They are very approachable and want us to be successful.”

Ashton is most looking forward to earning her BSN, gaining hands-on clinical experience, and acquiring the practical skills necessary to provide effective patient care. She believes the program will help her achieve her goals by equipping her with the knowledge and skills required to graduate and pass the NCLEX.

Braxton Bratcher

Braxton Bratcher

Braxton Bratcher, a fourth-semester student, describes his experience in the ABSN program as “nothing short of incredible.” He highlights the dedication of the faculty and staff to providing the best education possible and their genuine investment in students’ personal success. “The faculty at our UofL Owensboro School of Nursing have done an amazing job of making us feel as though we are truly a part of the school of nursing family,” Braxton says.

One of the most beneficial aspects of the program, according to Braxton, is the flexibility it offers. “In the ABSN program, your in-person commitments are limited to clinical obligations or scheduled educational sessions on campus. The ability to watch your lecture content on your own time allows you the opportunity to not have to put your life on hold for school.”

Braxton emphasizes the importance of having a schedule and a support system to succeed in the fast-paced program. He also appreciates the program’s focus on high-acuity courses and clinical experiences, which align with his goal of working in a high-acuity hospital setting. “This program has developed my self-confidence into a tool that I know will serve my future patients well,” Braxton says. In anticipation of graduation, Braxton has accepted an RN position on the Critical Care Unit at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.

Cole Crume

Cole Crume

Cole Crume, a recent ABSN graduate, reflects on his journey through the program and its impact on his nursing career.

"The rigorous pace of the ABSN program prepared me for my nursing career by teaching me to quickly learn and apply new information. This intensive environment equipped me with the skills needed to handle the fast-paced nature of nursing, ensuring I can provide high-quality care under pressure and adapt to daily challenges."

Cole’s most memorable experience was educating first graders at an elementary school. "Their enthusiasm and eagerness to share knowledge made the experience enjoyable. As a male nursing student, I felt my presence provided important representation for boys, showing them nursing is a viable career option."

He highlights the significant impact of clinical rotations and hands-on training. "These experiences allowed me to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, bridging the gap between education and practice. Direct patient interactions helped me develop essential clinical skills and build trusting, healing relationships with patients."

Support from faculty and peers was crucial. "Faculty provided continuous clinical education and assistance, often beyond listed office hours. The skills lab offered a safe space to practice. Peer relationships also provided significant support, fostering a collaborative and encouraging environment."

Challenges were part of the journey, but the supportive environment helped. "Adjusting to the demanding routine was challenging, but the support from peers and faculty made the transition smoother. Collaboration and encouragement helped me navigate the program successfully."

Since graduating, Cole has continued his education through Owensboro Health. "The ABSN program gave me a strong foundation, allowing me to confidently pursue further education. Ongoing learning is crucial for enhancing my competencies and staying updated with advancements in nursing practice." Cole is an RN on the Cardiac Stepdown Unit at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.

Cole advises current students or those considering the program to find their “why.” "Identify what drives you to be your best every day. This intrinsic motivation will help you overcome challenges and maintain your passion for nursing.”
