Healthy Tips from Dr. Christopher Behringer, Lifestyle Medicine Physician
Hi, I'm Dr. Christopher Behringer with Owensboro Health. I'm a lifestyle medicine specialist providing holistic treatments such as acupuncture and osteopathic manual therapy. So what is lifestyle medicine? Lifestyle medicine is the use of evidence and science-based lifestyle modifications to prevent, treat, and oftentimes, reverse chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. And yes, you actually can both manage and sometimes even reverse these conditions through effective lifestyle modifications.
Lifestyle medicine is made up of six pillars. The first pillar of lifestyle medicine is whole food, plant-based eating. And this is so that we can try and nourish the body with foods that help support health and healing. The second pillar is physical activity and finding ways to move and exercise in ways that you enjoy to improve your health.
The third pillar is restorative sleep, making sure that we give our bodies and our minds the downtime and recovery that they need. The fourth pillar is stress management- learning tools to help handle life's ups and downs. The fifth pillar is positive social connections and building relationships around us that help lift us up.
The sixth pillar is avoiding risky substances, making sure that we protect our health, and steering clear of harmful habits. So when we work together in collaboration, both as a patient and a physician, but also in collaboration with your current primary care provider, we can take these lifestyle modifications and really get measurable, evidence-based results.
This is in no way to try and replace or take the place of your primary care provider. This is about collaboration as a health team to help take care of your body as best as we can.
