Recovering After Surgery

Count on Owensboro Health Regional Hospital to help you recover after surgery safely and comfortably.

Recover Safely At The Hospital

After surgery, you’ll be moved to a recovery room. There, a nurse will monitor your vital signs, check your bandages and keep you comfortable as you wake up from anesthesia.

Your care team will let you know when it’s safe for you to return home. You must have a friend or family member drive you home or accompany you on public transportation.

Recover Safely At Home

Before you leave the hospital, your nurse will provide detailed discharge instructions. These instructions include information about:

  • How to take your medications
  • What to eat and drink
  • When it’s safe to resume certain activities
  • How to care for your incision
  • When to see your surgeon for a follow-up appointment

Follow these post-operative instructions carefully to avoid complications and recover as quickly as possible.

Ask a responsible adult to stay nearby for 24 hours after surgery to help administer any post-surgical treatments or medications and assist you in moving safely around your home.

When To Call Your Doctor

Call your doctor if you experience dizziness, severe pain, prolonged nausea and vomiting, a fever of 101.5 degrees or higher, or any other symptoms you find alarming.
