Tobacco Cessation Program
Kentucky has one of the highest rates of tobacco use in the nation. Owensboro Health has identified it as a priority focus area to improve the health of our communities. There are significant health effects and increased medical costs for nicotine users.
Offering Tobacco Treatment Specialists to the community at NO COST is part of our commitment to decreasing the lung cancer mortality rate in the area. Our program also offers access to nicotine replacement (patches, lozenges, and gum) and cessation medications (Chantix and Wellbutrin) for zero cost through the Owensboro Health Community Pharmacy.
For those who live outside Daviess or Henderson counties, we are able to mail prescriptions for no cost as well. Our goal is to lower as many barriers as possible for those who want to quit.
Our Program Resources
Owensboro Health employs Tobacco Treatment Specialists (TTS) to help tobacco users kick the habit. The specialists meet one-on-one with participants either in person or over the phone to discuss their triggers, concerns and previous attempts at quitting. They share skills to treat tobacco dependence and help the participant set attainable goals. They continue to have follow-ups with the participant to check their progress.
This service is offered at NO COST to all members of our community.
About the Tobacco Treatment Specialists (TTS)
The TTS program is inspired by the UK HealthCare’s BREATHE program. Our specialists complete a training course through BREATHE, which includes 27 hours of training and evaluations.
Youth Tobacco Treatment Program
About 95% of tobacco users start before the age of 21. We recognize that tobacco use among our area youth is a real concern, and strive to help those who want to quit be successful. We do so by helping youth understand how tobacco use affects their mind and body, recognize their reasons for tobacco use, develop strategies to manage stress and cravings, and lay the groundwork needed to avoid picking their tobacco product of choice back up.
